5 easy ways to a more sustainable laundry routine

Did you know that according to Fashion Revolution, 25% of the carbon footprint of a garment comes from the way we care for it? Here are five easy ways to better care for your clothes and make your laundry routine more sustainable.

Wash less
It seems quite obvious, but washing less is the best way to care for your clothes, AND the environment. Items made of linen, silk, and wool should not be washed as frequently, and can usually be hand washed, which consumes less water and is less energy demanding.

Wash in cold water
Washing your clothes in cold water is just as effective as using warm water as most laundry detergents are effective even at lower water temperatures. Using cooler water also extends the fabric life of your clothes. Win-win!

Eco-friendly laundry detergent
Choose eco-friendly laundry detergent (without phosphates and other harmful chemicals) and be sure to read the label for correct dosage. Often times, we use too much detergent mistakenly thinking the more we use, the cleaner our clothes will be!

Line dry your clothes
Cutting out the dryer will not only make a huge difference to your electricity bill, it will also extend the life of your clothes and minimise carbon dioxide emissions.

Wear it more than once
Jeans, jumpers, sweatshirts and sweaters can easily be worn more than once. And often, items made of wool only need some airing out instead of washing, as wool is a natural and self-cleansing material.
